Recycle aluminum cans, paper, plastic and glass. Call your waste compan or look in the yellow pages for recycling sites near you.
Replace incandescent light bulbs with new CFL’s, (compact fluorescent lights). They last up to seven years and use as much as 66% less energy. If everyone in the country were to replace just five bulbs, the net effect would be like taking eight million cars off the road.
Purchase unbleached coffee filters.
Purchase recycled paper towels, napkins and toilet paper. Tell your grocer to start carrying them if not available.
Turn off lights, televisions, and computers when not in use. Don’t keep your phone charger plugged in if you are not charging your phone. Enough energy is wasted daily from phone chargers alone to power a medium size city for 24 hours.
Change the filters in your furnace. Clean the vent in your dryer. Defrost your freezer. All these changes can save energy and money.
Recycle your plastic and paper shopping bags or take them back to the store. (Most stores recycle shopping bags.) A car can run a mile on the petroleum used to manufacturer just 14 plastic grocery bags!
Try not to let your car idle for more than 10 seconds. Contrary to popular belief, it takes less gas to restart your car than it does to idle for 10 seconds.
Buy produce from local farmers as the average distance produce travels is 1500 miles. Buying local saves energy and supports the local economy.
